How Miami Became A City for Artists

January 16, 2015

Fountainhead ResidencyThe city of Miami is one that houses residents and visitors from all over the world and from all walks of life, so it would make sense that there are a variety of artist residencies popping up around the city, which gives an opportunity to international artists to create art in Miami. The idea is that the artists create art in Miami, which may even be influenced by their experiences in this arguably one-of-a-kind city, and also allow for the artists to influence the local Miami culture.

One of the organizations that are making the relationship between artists and this city possible is the Fountainhead Residency located at the Morningside house, originally built in the 1950s, nearby Biscayne Bay. The residency has been operating since 2008 and since then, 300 artists have made it to this area from all over the world.

The organization provides travel, shelter, and makes sure that artists have a full social calender, believing that meeting people in the community will create opportunities for artists and the members of this community. The artists stay at the residency for four to eight weeks and have plenty of opportunities to entrench themselves in the city’s culture. The residencies are booked with a year in advance with artists whose work speak to the founders of the residency.

Another organization that houses artists in the city is the arts agency called Cannonball, which began in 2003 as LegalArt, a legal advisory firm that offered affordable or free help to artists. This organization has grown in success and now is able to offer grants, as well as hosts the Research.Art.Dialogue seminar series, plus provides a residency for artists to enjoy.

These are just a few of the residency programs and organizations that are making it possible for Miami’s art scene and culture to thrive in new ways.
